Which IIQE Papers Do I Need? 1, 2, 3, 5 & MPF
Updated
As at 31 Oct 2026, the Insurance Authority lists IIQE papers on the Principles and Practice of Insurance (Paper 1), General Insurance, Long Term Insurance and Investment-linked Long Term Insurance: almost every new intermediary sits Paper 1 plus the paper for the business they will carry on, and anyone selling MPF schemes also sits the separate MPF Intermediaries Examination.

Exemptions
Some qualifications exempt you from particular IIQE papers. The Insurance Authority publishes the list of recognised qualifications; check it on the Insurance Authority website before you book a paper you may not need.
MPF is a separate exam
The MPF Schemes Examination stopped being part of the IIQE with effect from 2 May 2013. The MPFA now specifies the examination for MPF intermediaries. See the MPF Intermediaries Exam guide.
Papers 2, 3 and 5 are coming
Start with the IIQE Paper 1 guide, or check whether you need an SFC paper instead in IIQE vs HKSI exams. Then sit the free mock.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need IIQE Paper 1?
Almost certainly: Paper 1 (Principles and Practice of Insurance) is the common paper for insurance intermediaries, sat alongside the paper for your class of business. Check the Insurance Authority's exemption list if you hold a relevant qualification.
What are Papers 2, 3 and 5 for?
Paper 2 covers general insurance, Paper 3 long term insurance, and Paper 5 investment-linked long term insurance (ILAS). Which you need depends on the business you will carry on; your principal or the Insurance Authority's guidance will say.
I will sell MPF schemes. Which exam is that?
The MPF Intermediaries Examination, which is separate from the IIQE. The MPFA sets the registration requirements for MPF intermediaries.
Does IIQE Prep cover every paper?
Paper 1 and the MPF exam are open now. Papers 2, 3 and 5 are coming soon; join the waitlist on each paper's page to hear the day it opens.
