A new member of an MPF exempted ORSO registered scheme leaves in 2026 after 5 years of post-MPF service. Final average monthly relevant income is $36,000 and benefits accrued during the exemption period are $210,000. What are the minimum MPF benefits?
Answer: $180,000. Minimum MPF benefits are the lesser of the benefits accrued during the exemption period and 1.2 x capped final average monthly relevant income x years of post-MPF service.Working:1. Income is capped at $30,000 (on or after 1 June 2014), so use $30,000 instead of $36,000.2. Formula: 1.2 x $30,000 x 5 = $180,000.3. Minimum MPF benefits = lesser of $210,000 and $180,000 = $180,000.Why not the others:• $150,000: that uses the $25,000 cap, which applied from 1 June 2012 to 31 May 2014.• $210,000: that is the accrued amount; it is only the lesser figure if the income cap is ignored.• $216,000: that applies the formula to $36,000 without the $30,000 cap.Watch out: Forgetting the $30,000 income cap, which changes which figure is the lesser.Rule: Minimum MPF benefits = lesser of (a) accrued benefits during exemption and (b) 1.2 x final average monthly relevant income (capped) x years of post-MPF service.Source: MPF Study Notes, Tenth Edition (June 2026; examinable from 1 Oct 2026), section 6.5.3 (checked 31 Oct 2026)
Forgetting the $30,000 income cap, which changes which figure is the lesser.
